Choosing the right topics and the right products to review is probably the most important factor that will determine how successful you are.
Sometimes it can be a difficult balance - finding subjects that people are searching for and want to read about, but that do not already have so many websites and pages about them that you won't be able to compete.
Obviously you want to write about what you know about or can research effectively, but that should still leave you some scope to choose topics that are more likely to be profitable. This is no science, and there is no sure fire method for finding the best topics and products.
But there are some simple step that you can follow which will substantially increase your chances of success.
- If you want to make money you need to get readers clicking through to your work from the search engines. That means that you need to match the topics that you are writing about with the things that people are searching for. Before you write a review you should identify at least one 'keyword', if not 2, 3 or more, which are the search terms which you hope will lead people to your work from google and the other search engines
- Research is very important. Search for 'google keyword tool' to find one of the most popular free online tools that can be used to find out how many people are searching for a keyword and what advertisers are paying for clicks on that topic (and therefore how much you will earn from each click you get from an advert on one of your pages).
- People only search for reviews of products that they have already heard of (obviously). That severely limits the number of products you can review and get search engine traffic for from people specifically searching for reviews of that product. You can get round this by targeting phrases like 'the best...', 'cheap....reviews', 'fun....' and so on and on and on - just use your imagination!
- Adverts of all kinds, on TV, online, billboards or anywhere else are a great source of inspiration for topics and specific products that you can review and which you know advertisers are willing to pay for.
- If you can be one of the first to review a new product then you have a majhor advantage. Firstly you have less competition as there won't be many other reviews already published online, and secondly there will probably be a lot of people looking for reviews of that product.
